An audience forgives almost anything before it forgives not being able to see a face. Faces are where the performance is, and they disappear for reasons that have nothing to do with how much light is in the room. Usually there is plenty. It is arriving from the wrong direction.
Modelling is made by shadow, not by quantity
A face reads as a solid object because parts of it are lit and parts are not. Remove the difference and the object flattens. Light arriving straight down the axis of the audience's view puts every shadow directly behind the feature that cast it, where nobody can see it, and the result is a face that is thoroughly illuminated and completely without form.
Push the source too high and the opposite failure appears. Brows shadow the eye sockets, the nose casts down across the mouth, and the audience loses precisely the two features that carry expression. This is the classic fault of houses whose only front position is a ceiling slot directly above the front rows.
Why two sources at an angle became the default
The convention of lighting an area from two front positions, each placed off to one side and raised, with the pair differentiated in colour and one treated as dominant, was set out by Stanley McCandless at Yale in the nineteen thirties and has survived because the geometry works. The horizontal offset returns the shadow to a visible side of the face. The vertical offset keeps that shadow off the backdrop. And the difference between the two sides supplies modelling without either one being harsh.
It is a starting point rather than a rule. The angles are a compromise between two failures, and the correct compromise depends on the house, the height of the available positions and the scale of the staging. A designer who follows it mechanically in a room whose positions do not allow it produces neither of its benefits.
Separation is a different job from illumination
A face can be well lit and still merge into what is behind it, because the eye distinguishes objects by edges and the edge is not being drawn. Light from behind and above rims the head and shoulders and lifts the performer off the set. Without it, a dark costume against a dark ground reads as an absence with a face floating in it.
The audience adapts to the brightest thing in view
Vision is relative. A backdrop lit brighter than the actors will pull the eye's adaptation up, and faces that measure perfectly adequately will be perceived as dim. The complaint that reaches the lighting desk is that the actors need more light. The effective response is often to take light off the cloth.
The same mechanism explains why a single practical lamp on a dark stage is so much more dangerous than it looks. It sets the adaptation for the whole room, and everything the designer wanted seen sits below it.
Skin reflects different amounts of light
A rig balanced around one face will not deliver the same result on another, because darker skin returns less of the light that falls on it. This is straightforward physics rather than a matter of opinion, and it has a straightforward consequence: a state that was set with one performer standing in it can leave a differently complexioned colleague visibly under-lit in the same position.
The adjustment belongs to the rig, not to the performer. More light on that position, attention to where the key sits, and colour choices that do not drain warmth are ordinary craft. Checking the states with the actual cast standing in them, rather than with whoever is available to walk the stage, is the practice that catches it, and it costs nothing but scheduling.
What the building decides for you
Front of house positions are where the architect put them. A balcony rail that is too low produces flat light and shadows on the cloth; a slot that is too high produces the shadowed eyes described above. Older halls frequently offer one position and no choice. When neither angle is available, the honest options are to move the staging into a part of the stage the available angles can serve, or to bring positions into the room temporarily, which is a rigging question with its own duties attached.
What we cannot verify
The conventional angles are a heuristic from practice and teaching rather than a measured optimum, and published variations differ by house, by period and by teacher. Nothing here is a specification. Reflectance figures for skin vary by individual and by makeup and are not usefully reduced to a number for design purposes; the reliable method is to look at the actual faces under the actual states. Claims that particular fixtures render faces better than others come from the people selling them.
