Foldback: why performers ask for less rather than more

Every wedge spends gain before feedback, and every request for more of one voice raises the floor under all of them.

A performer who cannot hear themselves will push, go sharp, or stop trusting the ensemble. Foldback exists to prevent that, and it is the part of a sound system most likely to be designed by accumulated request rather than by decision. The requests almost always take the same form: more of me. The mechanism explains why granting them makes the situation worse.

A wedge is another loudspeaker in the same room

A floor monitor does not deliver sound privately. It radiates into the stage, into the house, and directly into the microphones a metre in front of it. Every decibel added to a wedge is a decibel subtracted from the gain available before the system rings, and the microphone cannot tell the difference between the performer's voice and the performer's voice arriving back from the floor.

The pattern of the capsule decides how expensive this is. A cardioid is least sensitive directly behind itself, so a wedge on axis behind it costs comparatively little. A hypercardioid keeps a rear lobe and its nulls sit off to the rear quarters, so the same wedge in the same place costs considerably more. Monitor placement is an acoustic calculation, not a matter of where there is room on the deck.

The loop that is social rather than acoustic

Each performer hears the total of every wedge on stage, not only their own. When one asks for more of themselves, the total rises, and everyone else's own voice is now buried a little deeper in it. They ask for more. The total rises again. Within a technical rehearsal the stage level can climb ten or fifteen decibels with nobody hearing themselves any better than when it started, because what changed was the noise floor rather than the ratio.

The remedy is subtraction. When a performer cannot hear themselves, the effective move is usually to remove whatever is masking them from their own mix rather than to add more of them. A monitor mix with four sources in it is easier to hear into than one with fourteen, and the discipline of asking what can come out is the single practice that separates a stage that settles from one that escalates.

What in-ear monitoring changes, and what it costs

A sealed in-ear feed reaches one person. It adds nothing to the room, nothing to the microphones and nothing to the gain problem, and it can be as loud as that performer needs without any of the penalties above. That is a genuine structural advantage rather than a fashion.

It is also a different experience of the evening. Isolation removes the room, the audience and the acoustic sound of colleagues standing two metres away, all of which carried timing and blend information the performer had been using. Ensembles that switch often report that they have stopped hearing each other, and the usual answer is a pair of ambience microphones in the house fed into the mix, which restores some of what the earpiece removed.

Latency becomes a live concern in a way it never was with a wedge. A singer hears their own voice through bone conduction instantaneously and through the electrical path a little later, and once that delay grows past a few milliseconds the combination is audible and unpleasant. Long digital chains with several conversions accumulate it quietly.

Wedges and ears are not mutually exclusive

Productions frequently treat the choice as total, and it need not be. A hybrid stage gives sealed feeds to the people who need level and consistency, usually the principals carrying the show, and leaves low wedges for those whose work depends on the acoustic room, often the chorus and the players. This keeps the total stage level far below what a fully wedged stage would need while preserving the ensemble contact that full isolation removes.

The cost is complexity. Two monitoring worlds mean two sets of mixes, two sets of failures and an operator tracking both, and a performer moving between them during a show is being asked to recalibrate their own voice mid-scene.

Level, and the part that is not a preference

Sealed earpieces put the sound source past the ear's own protective mechanisms, and a performer setting their own level does so without any external reference for how loud it actually is. Occupational exposure guidance published by government health agencies, rather than by equipment manufacturers, describes cumulative daily dose rather than momentary comfort, and a long technical rehearsal followed by a performance is a long day by that measure.

Two design decisions belong to the production rather than to the performer: a limiter in the monitor path, so that a dropped microphone or a feedback burst cannot arrive at full scale into sealed ears, and a level set with someone else listening. Neither is a matter of taste.

What we cannot verify

Comparative claims about the isolation, latency or safety of specific monitoring products come from the companies selling them and are made under test conditions that are seldom described. We reproduce none of them. Exposure guidance is published for occupational settings generally and is not a clinical assessment of any individual; questions about hearing belong with a qualified audiologist rather than with a sound department. The relationships described here are acoustic, and they describe an ordinary stage rather than a particular one.
