Almost no live performance happens in a room built for it. Plays go into chapels, concerts into school halls, opera into converted cinemas, and each of those buildings answers a voice in its own way before any equipment is unpacked. This section is about that answer, and about what a sound system can and cannot do once the building has spoken.
The through line is that reinforcement is a ratio problem rather than a power problem. What an audience understands depends on how much direct sound reaches them relative to how much reflected sound arrives behind it. That ratio is governed by distances, by how narrowly energy is aimed, and by how much soft material the room contains. Amplification raises both sides of the ratio at once, which is why the instinct to turn it up so often fails.
Where figures appear in these articles they come from standards bodies, published engineering literature, or regulators, and the type of source is named each time. Where a claim originates with a company selling the remedy, we say so and treat it as advocacy. Where a number cannot be traced to a stated method, it does not appear at all.
None of it substitutes for measuring a specific room. A hall that flatters a choir will fight a play, the same building behaves differently full and empty, and the decisive choice is usually the booking rather than the equipment list.
