The two words are used interchangeably on riders and in production meetings, and the confusion is expensive. Reinforcement means supporting a source the audience can already hear, so that the far rows receive what the near rows receive. Amplification means the loudspeaker is the source, and without it there is no show. They demand different equipment, different operators, and different assumptions about who controls the performance.
The dividing line is where the audience places the sound
The precedence effect decides this. When the same signal reaches a listener from two directions within a short interval, the listener localises the event to whichever arrived first and fuses the second into it. Reinforcement lives on that mechanism. If the acoustic sound from the stage arrives before the loudspeaker's contribution, the audience places the voice on the performer and experiences the system as an increase in clarity rather than as a device.
Invert the order and the illusion collapses. A loudspeaker that arrives first pulls the image onto itself, and the audience watches one place while hearing another. Every seat in which that happens is a seat where the staging has quietly stopped working, and no amount of tonal adjustment repairs it, because the problem is arrival order rather than frequency response.
There is a ceiling on reinforcement
Support only remains support while the natural sound still contributes meaningfully. Push the system far enough above the acoustic level and the performer's own output becomes irrelevant to what the audience hears, whatever the delay settings say. At that point the production has crossed into amplification whether or not anybody decided to.
This crossing is rarely announced. It happens incrementally, one technical rehearsal at a time, as levels are raised to solve a problem in the back row. The recognisable symptom is a performer who has stopped projecting because they can hear themselves in the room and assume the audience can too.
Who holds the balance
This is the part that matters beyond the equipment list. Under reinforcement, the balance between performers is set by the performers. A singer who leans into a phrase gets louder; an ensemble that has rehearsed its internal dynamics hears the result of that rehearsal in the house. The operator is adjusting the room's shortcomings.
Under amplification the operator sets the balance. Each performer arrives on a separate channel and the mix decides who is foreground. That is not a criticism, it is the entire craft of musical theatre sound, and it makes possible material that could not be staged otherwise. But it moves an artistic decision from the stage to the console, and it should be moved deliberately rather than by drift.
What each choice actually costs
Reinforcement keeps the room's natural blend and the performers' authority over their own dynamic, and pays for it with a low ceiling: it cannot rescue a badly matched voice, cannot survive an unusually noisy audience, and cannot deliver consistency between performances.
Amplification buys consistency, control and reach, and pays with dependence. Every performer needs a capsule, every capsule needs a transmitter, a battery, a spare and someone tracking them, and a failure in any of that is now a failure of the show rather than a degradation of it. It also requires foldback, because performers who cannot hear themselves acoustically must be given something to hear.
Mixed cases are the common cases
Most productions are neither one nor the other throughout. A play may run acoustically and reinforce only a single scene played upstage behind a scrim. An opera may leave the voices alone and amplify a pre-recorded storm. A concert may reinforce the strings and amplify the singer.
These hybrids are legitimate and common, and they are also where the confusion does its damage, because the two halves need different settings and the same system is being asked to do both. The delay that preserves the stage image for the reinforced material is not necessarily the delay that suits the amplified material, and a system aligned for one will be misaligned for the other. Naming which mode each cue is in, on the calling script, is not pedantry; it is the only way the operator knows which set of assumptions applies at any moment.
Naming the choice early
The decision belongs in the production meeting, not in the technical rehearsal, because it determines the microphone plot, the number of channels, whether radio frequency coordination is needed at all, whether foldback exists, and how many people are required to run the show. A production that has not made the choice explicitly usually discovers it has made the expensive one by default.
What we cannot verify
The precedence effect is well established in the psychoacoustic literature, but the exact interval within which two arrivals fuse varies with programme material, level difference and room, and single figures quoted for it in trade publications rarely state which condition they describe. We do not reproduce such a figure here for that reason. Claims about how far a system can be pushed before an audience perceives it as amplified are subjective, are usually made by people who installed the system, and should be treated as opinion.
